In Between: Leticia’s Lovers

Snippet Saturday

The topic for this week is “In Between” and I immediately thought of Leticia’s Lovers. Leticia had a rocky road to love and her story remains one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy this snippet from Leticia’s Lovers.

Morning came all too quickly. They shared a quick shower with only mild groping before they both dressed for work.

“Will you come and stay tonight?” Gavin asked.

Charlie tossed his damp towel aside and strode the two steps needed to reach Gavin. “The idea of not being with you hadn’t occurred to me.” He dragged Gavin into his arms and kissed him, not roughly but slow and gentle, pouring every writhing emotion inside into his kiss. When he lifted his head they were both breathing hard.

“Damn, I wish I didn’t need to go to work,” Gavin said with a glance at his wristwatch.

“I know the feeling. Do you have time for a coffee at the café?”

“No, I have a patient arriving in half an hour. I’ll have to prepare the surgery.” Gavin lifted his head, glancing toward the surgery with a frown. His shoulders tensed beneath Charlie’s hands. “Fuck.”

“You okay?”

“Yeah.” Gavin didn’t sound very certain.

Charlie heard the tap-tap of shoes and turned to the door. “Your patients come to your bedroom? Is there another door I should have locked last night?”

“The one to the surgery waiting room,” Gavin muttered. “I forgot to check it. I had other things on my mind.”

“Gavin, I thought I’d—” A decidedly feminine form skidded to a halt in the doorway.

Leticia—the woman from last night. Today she wore tight jeans and a formfitting T-shirt in pale blue. She wore a cap on her head, her blonde hair poking through the back in a long ponytail. What little color she had in her face flooded away when she took in both Gavin and Charlie. They both wore trousers but neither had donned shirts and they stood way too close to try the casual friends ploy. The scent of sex hung on the air and the rumpled bed gave more than a hint of how they’d spent their night.

Leticia’s brown eyes swept over Charlie, coming to rest on the mark. His skin prickled as if she’d physically touched him and he automatically covered the raised site with his fingers.

“You marked him?” The pain in her voice had Charlie wanting to comfort her. He noted it had the same affect on Gavin. Collectively they took a step toward her.

Leticia slapped her hand over her mouth and backed up, her eyes wide with panic and betrayal.

“Leticia, it’s not what it looks like,” Gavin said.

“Oh yeah?” Bitterness filled her words. Her eyes swept over both of them, skimming their bare chests and the obvious marks on their shoulders. “He bit you too. You can’t—I thought we…oh hell.” Leticia turned and fled.

Black Moment: Leticia’s Lovers

Snippet Saturday

This week’s theme is black moment. According to Complete Idiot’s Guide to Getting Your Romance Published by Julie Beard, the black moment is the point in a romance where the relationship appears doomed because the characters are unable or unwilling to resolve the core inner conflicts keeping them apart. Neither the characters or reader can see how the problem will be resolved.

Every romance has a black moment, and they usually come toward the end of the book. Since I don’t like to give too much away, I thought I’d take an excerpt from Leticia’s Lovers. I think many readers hesitate to pick up this story because the heroine has FIV, the feline version of AIDs. Although the story is sad—I cried while I was writing it and I picked on Leticia during this story with an entire series of black moments—I do manage to give her a happy ending. You’ll just have to trust me on this.

Leopards at Amberkatze’s Book Blog – Win an ebook!

Scarlet Woman The Scarlet Woman tour continues at Amberkatze’s Book Blog today. I’m talking about both Scarlet Woman and leopards and giving away a download from the Middlemarch Mates series.

Here’s the blurb for Scarlet Woman:

Emily Scarlet’s husband left her for his secretary and died in a car accident—all on the same day. Now, six months later, Emily has emerged from her chrysalis of painful memories. And to prove she has what it takes to attract a man, she’s determined to experience one perfect night of passion.

Feline shape shifter, Saber Mitchell has a problem with his four boisterous younger brothers. They’re out of control. It’s too late for him, but he hopes to get his brothers mated and settled, and the ball is the place to introduce them to marriageable women.

Unbridled sex is the last thing he plans on, but one glimpse of Emily Scarlet changes his mind. Sex with her is a necessity. They dance. They make love.

One thing is clear—a single night isn’t enough. Saber must have her for his mate, but Emily isn’t so easy to convince…or trust.

In Scarlet Woman news, I’ve received a wonderful review from I Do Not Want To Wait, I Want The Book Now. Here are the highlights: “I can’t recommend this book enough! Plenty of hot sex, many LOL moments, and a heroine that you can’t help but relate to. It was flat-out fun and just what I needed at that moment.”

In Cat Burglar news, I’ve received a Five Star review from Manic Readers. This review made my head swell

“Okay, I must confess that I had never read Ms. Munro’s Middlemarch Mates series, but as I finished Cat Burglar, which is the sixth book in the series, I’m kicking myself. Where have I been? This book was absolutely amazing. Ms. Munro did a fantastic job of providing the reader with just enough humor, suspense, and erotic romance to keep you begging for more.”

In Leticia’s Lovers news, I received another Recommended read review from Blackraven’s Reviews

“Bravo, Ms. Munro for providing us with another story that touches heart, soothes the soul, and renews our faith in miracles. If you’re looking for a heart-warming, at times tear jerking, sensual story that will bring a smile to your face, then Leticia’s Lovers is the book to read. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and can’t wait for the next book in the Middlemarch Mate series. Hint! Hint!”

So, what do all these great reviews tell you? They say if you haven’t read any of the books in the Middlemarch Mates series you’re missing out! Check out the entire Middlemarch Mates series here.

Journey to Happiness

Snippet Saturday

This week’s theme is the opening scene. After much thought I chose the opening for Leticia’s Lovers. Leticia is a lion shapeshifter who is suffering from FIV, the feline version of AIDs. On the surface it looks as if she’s in dire straights, but rest assured, Leticia does get her happy ending. If you’re interested in reading Saul and Lucas’s story (who also feature in the excerpt) check out Stray Cat Strut.

Leticia's LoversLETICIA’S LOVERS by Shelley Munro

Leticia Huntingdon scrutinized the hair in her brush and knew the FIV or feline immunodeficiency virus was no longer dormant. A healthy feline shifter simply didn’t lose this much hair during the grooming process. Fear, stark and frightening, kicked her in the gut and her legs trembled so much she thought she’d fall if she didn’t sit. She sank onto the bed, the tremors speeding to her hands as well as her legs.

“Damn,” she whispered.

A glance at her wristwatch confirmed she didn’t have much time before someone thumped on her bedroom door. The last thing she wanted to do tonight was socialize at a birthday party, but if she said she didn’t want to attend, her brother Lucas and his partner Saul Sinclair would start to worry. And she didn’t want that. They’d both been so good to her—Lucas leaving the pride in South Africa to stay with her, and Saul and his leopard-shifter friends accepting her without hesitation.

Her gaze drifted to the tufts of blonde hair clinging to the black bristles of her brush and this time anger bloomed, hot and consuming. It wasn’t fair. Nothing about this was fair. Her ex-lover, who had given her the disease by raping her and ripping open her shoulder, had never faced justice, his position as a lawyer keeping him safe. His word against hers. She’d thought she’d discovered a home in Middlemarch, yet the disease, the feline equivalent of HIV in humans, would steal that from her.

No cure.

The two words echoed mockingly through her head. Gavin Finley, the local vet and doctor to the shifters, had told her the prognosis was good, that they might not be able to cure the disease but could manage it. According to him, although she had the disease, the symptoms were mild and only exacerbated by stress. So managed it they had, and pretty well. Thanks to Gavin, her health remained good, apart from the latest sign. Not so good. Gavin had mentioned the symptoms to look for and losing hair sat at the top of the list along with weight loss and difficulty breathing. A harsh sigh whooshed up her throat, burning all the way.

AIDS. Such a little word. Such a big disease.

Tears obscured her normally excellent vision, making her reflection waver in the mirror.

A tap sounded on her bedroom door. “Leticia, sweetheart. Are you almost ready? We’re going to be late to the party. We still have to drive to Middlemarch.” Saul. Leticia sucked in a deep breath, fighting anxiety and dredging up anger to hide her fear.

“Bite me. Don’t you know you always have to wait on women?” she added, dragging the brush through her hair again and forcing humor into her voice despite the terror curling across her face. “Always in a hurry.”

“Sweetheart, I’d love to bite you, but I don’t want to upset your brother,” Saul countered smoothly.

Leticia couldn’t help the involuntary smirk when she heard a familiar masculine growl in the background. Lucas. It was all a front. Her brother and Saul were crazy about each other. Mates.

Unthinking, she drew the brush through her hair again. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw more loose strands glinting amongst the bristles. Setting it aside, she picked up a comb. It didn’t stop the fall of hair. Apprehension lurched through her mind, her recent weight loss taking on a sinister meaning. How could this happen almost overnight? Dammit, she’d followed all of Gavin’s instructions, eating properly. Cosseting herself and keeping stress to a minimum. True, things were difficult at work, the pressure of a big case making for long days. She’d thought she was coping.

By the time she finished, her long blonde curls appeared tidier and less. Thin. Too thin. A hat. She’d have to wear a hat. She’d get through tonight and after that…

Well, she didn’t want to think about that now. Dying at a relatively young age wasn’t something she wanted to dwell on tonight. She shoved the thought aside and stood.

Leticia dressed rapidly, rejecting the black trousers she’d intended to wear in favor of a short red skirt. She needed to distract tonight, and bright colors and long legs would do the trick. Deftly, she twisted her hair into a loose knot at the back of her neck. A low-cut red, black and cream top covered her upper half and hid the scar on her shoulder from public view. With her makeup already done, all she needed to do was add dangling earrings and a jaunty black hat. She slipped her feet into black slides, the heels giving her a couple of extra inches in height. After grabbing a black clutch and looping the long strap over her shoulder, she pasted on a smile in preparation for the best acting job of her life.

“About time,” Lucas said when she strolled into their den. He and Saul were standing so close, she knew she’d interrupted a romantic moment. Envy washed through her in a wave, followed closely by self-pity. Gavin. Every time she saw him she wanted to jump him. They were compatible. Definitely possible mates.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to leave?” she asked, aiming for light and teasing. Leticia surprised herself with her acting abilities, but then she’d had plenty of practice recently, pretending she cared nothing for Gavin Finley, the shifter doctor. “It looked to me as if you were having a private moment.” She arched a brow, letting the ghost of a smile quiver her lips. Yep, award-winning performance.

“Shut your mouth, brat,” her brother drawled, the familiar South African accent bringing a yearning for home. She was home, she reminded herself. The savannah land of the veld was no longer her habitat.

“She needs to get her own man,” Saul said, his green eyes glinting with mischief. “Gavin wants you. Why don’t you stop running and let him catch you for a change?”

Lucas nodded agreement, and Leticia had to swallow rapidly to force back the building emotion. She would not cry. She would not. “There’s no magic between us,” she said, once again forcing out the lie without flinching or lowering her gaze. If things had been different she would have mated with Gavin by now. After meeting with him, she’d realized the feelings she’d had for her ex were a pale imitation. No. No matter how much she craved the same closeness Saul and her brother experienced, she refused to put Gavin through the trauma of being with her and unable to officially bestow the mark. One taste of her blood and she’d pass on the FIV virus. Unthinkable to place Gavin under the same death sentence she struggled with on a daily basis. When she realized both men still studied her she added, “Besides, I’ve seen how it is between you and Saul. Why would I settle for anything less? Why would Gavin settle for me when we all know he can’t complete the mating process? It would be difficult for both of us because we couldn’t have a proper feline relationship.”

“She has a point,” Saul said.

Any other day Leticia would have snapped back a witty rejoinder, thriving on teasing the two. Not today. She turned for the door.

“Emily said there are other single males attending,” Lucas said. “Maybe you’ll hit it off with one of them.”

“Maybe.” Leticia kept her reply noncommittal. Let her brother and Saul think there was hope. She knew better.

Release Day at Ellora’s Cave!

It’s release day at Ellora’s Cave, and Leticia’s Lovers is finally out. Yes, it’s true. After what seems like a long wait, it’s finally here. Amy W – are you listening???

Here’s the purchase link.

Today I share my release date with friend and blogging buddy, Amy Ruttan. You’ve probably heard more than enough about my book, so I sent Amy a mini interview and pleaded for answers, at very short notice, I might add. Champ that she is, Amy came through. I present to you: Hard Candy by Amy Ruttan.

Photobucket

HARD CANDY by Amy Ruttan

A golden ticket to a hedonistic club, that’s the marketing idea Lenore Byrne offers her newest client Pallator Sinclair as a way to promote his Innocent Pleasures Candy Company. Candy that is for adults only. Landing this account will make her career and it doesn’t hurt that her client is damn sexy.

Pallator has been up and down Madison Avenue, but no one gets his vision for his company. That is, until he meets Lenore. He offers her the chance of a lifetime, a tour of the hedonistic club. It’s an offer she can’t refuse, but can she turn down his other offer? To completely let herself go with the sinful man she hardly knows.

Purchase Link.

1. Where did the idea for Hard Candy come from?

Well, I saw the call for submission on the EC website, and I got thinking about candy, and of one of my favorite books as a child, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I was trying to think how I could make candy erotic. I’m not one for placing food in various spots in the body etc., I had read a post on Redlines and Deadlines from the editors about the various kinds of food “stuffing” they had seen. So I wanted to write a story where there was candy involved, but make it for adults only. The story then just fell into place, I made the candy the reason my hero and heroine got together. He owns an Adult brand of candy and she’s in advertising.

2. Describe your hero for us and then wrap up your description with one word that describes him best.

His name is Pallator Sinclair, his mother is from Brazil, and his father is from England. His mother’s family has lived in Brazil for a long time. They know things about the rain forests other don’t, though he doesn’t know the specific tribe his mother’s family descended from. He’s sexy, darker skin, shoulder length black hair, dark eyes and a sexy Portuguese accent. He’s intelligent, was schooled at some very fine post secondary institutions and very open with his sexuality. He’s a savvy business man. He knows what he wants and goes for it. One word that describes him, I would say confident. Pallator Sinclair is confident.

3. Do you tell people you write erotic romance? Why or why not?

It depends. I certainly don’t tell the other mothers at my daughter’s school. They know I write romance, they know I have books in e-book format, but they don’t know my pen name and I don’t tell them. I would if they honestly asked, but I’m trying to keep my identity secret around my daughter’s friends. I would hate to have my career affect my children since they are both so young. Others, oh yeah, I proudly let them know I write it. I’m not ashamed by that fact. I like what I write, I love writing the sexual tension. I like HOT books, so writing erotic was a natural transition for me.

My entire family knows, my parents, my in-laws (though they aren’t impressed), my friends all know. My former co-workers knew and my DH’s co-workers know what I write. My husband’s co-workers think he’s the luckiest man alive … it’s our private joke. And most people who were at Nationals this past year, I am sure, know I write erotic romance since I stumbled out of the Passionate Ink Party with a vibrator or two in my hands. LOL.

Thanks, Amy, and all the best with your newest release!

Read a Feline Paranormal Romance

Thursday Thirteen

My latest release LETICIA’S LOVERS is out tomorrow. It’s part of my Middlemarch Mates series about a feline shapeshifter community in the South Island of New Zealand. I love both reading and writing feline shapeshifters. There’s something about a cat that’s graceful, mysterious and beautiful at the same time. I like them because they’re independent, confident and have a touch of arrogance about them.

In celebration of feline shifters: Thirteen Feline Shifter stories.

1. Nalini Singh’s Psy series. Nalini’s both a friend and a wonderful writer. The first book in her series is called SLAVE TO SENSATION. It’s a great read and very different and original from other paranormal stories available. My favorite in the series is CARESSED BY ICE. (mostly leopard but not all)

2. MERCURY’S WAR by Lora Leigh, one of the Breeds series. I really enjoyed this one. (lion)

3. SABER-TOOTH by Jordan Summers (tiger)

4. PRIMED TO POUNCE and JAGUAR’S RULE by TJ Michaels (jaguar)

5. HUNTING THE HUNTRESS by Ember Case (lion)

6. STRAY by Rachel Vincent. This is the first book in a were-cat series. (leopard)

7. SLAVE by Cheryl Brooks. This is the first book in a futuristic series with feline-like heroes.

8. MAGIC BITES by Ilona Andrews. This isn’t exactly a shapeshifter book but one of the male characters is a lion.

9. WILD RAIN by Christine Feehan. (leopard)

10. TIGER EYE by Marjorie Liu (tiger)

11. FERAL ATTRACTION by Marie Hart and Paige McKellan (lion/cougar)

12. Middlemarch Mates: SCARLET WOMAN, PEEPING TOM, STRAY CAT STRUT, ASSASSIN, CAT AND MOUSE, CAT BURGLAR by Shelley Munro. These are the first six books in my feline shapeshifter series. (leopard – mainly black/lion)

13. LETICIA’S LOVERS by Shelley Munro – out today from Ellora’s Cave (leopard/lion)

Do you like feline shifters? If so what do you enjoy about them? Is there a different paranormal creature that floats your boat? And if you prefer contemporary romance, that’s fine. Tell me what you’re reading because contemporary romance is my second favorite thing to read.

Book Trailer: Leticia’s Lovers

After reading Leah Braemel’s post on making a book trailer and seeing her new trailer last week, I decided to try making one of my own. Armed with Leah’s instructions, plus the instructions I’d saved a while ago from Brenda Coulter, I started on my book trailer journey.

I enjoyed making my trailer, although Leah was right when she said it was a huge time suck. It took me all of Saturday night plus most of Sunday to get as far as I have. It’s fairly basic and I haven’t experimented much with fading pictures out etc. That will come with my next attempt. One thing I knew for sure was that I shouldn’t make my trailer too long. As a viewer of trailers, my attention wanders after one and a half minutes. I decided I needed to make my trailer as short as I could.

There are some wonderful book trailers available for viewing on Youtube and some real stinkers. I think mine fits somewhere in the middle. I’m happy with my first attempt, and I’m sure that next time will be easier because I’ve learned so much. Trial by doing!

Do you like to make book trailers? Do you have any handy hints to share on making trailers? Readers, do you enjoy watching trailers or do you run a mile when you see authors promoting them? Are there particular things you like or dislike about trailers?

I’m blogging over at Access Romance on Monday 19th January. The subject? My recent trip to Tongariro National Park. The post goes live at 6.00am. I hope you’ll pop over and say hello.
