Bella, our puppy is trying to push past my laptop and get onto my knee for a cuddle. Ah-ha! I think. Inspiration for today’s Thursday Thirteen.
Thirteen Books and Movies Featuring Dogs
1. Scooby Doo – my very favorite cartoon. I like the cartoons much better than the modern remake. My favorite line from the cartoons – “And I would’ve got away with it if it wasn’t for you meddling kids!”
2. Lassie – I’m going to mention Lassie, the classic TV show. The truth is I never really liked the show, but it is a classic.
3. Romances by Kristan Higgins. All her stories have a dog, usually owned by the heroine. If you enjoy small town contemporary romances, try one of Ms. Higgins’ books. I doubt you’ll be disappointed!
4. Call of the Wild by Jack London. Read the book or see the movie. It’s set in the Yukon and features sled dogs.
5. 101 Dalmatians – a classic Disney tale of dogs with spots and fur coats
6. Lady and the Tramp – another Disney movie. I love the scene where Lady is sharing a piece of spaghetti with her Tramp friend.
7. Marley and Me by John Grogan. Made into a movie staring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston
8. Love is a Four-Legged Word by Kandy Shepherd – I haven’t read this book yet, but it’s on my to-read list.
9. Anyone But You by Jennifer Crusie – this is classic Crusie and a fun read.
10. Gone to the Dogs (A Dog Lovers Mystery) by Susan Conant. There is an entire series. Dogs and mystery!
11. Beethoven – the movie featuring a St Bernard.
12. Pet Rescue mysteries by Linda O Johnston. The main character runs an animal shelter.
13 Talking Dogs series written by moi! I never set out to write a dog in this series, but our dog Scotty was trying to get my attention while I was writing. She was very persistent and I said to her, “If you’re not good I’ll write you into my scene.” So I did. A dog popped out of the bushes, and once she was there she refused to leave. The series comprises of Talking Dogs, Aliens and Purple People Eaters, Never Send a Dog to do a Woman’s Job and Romantic Interlude.

Dean Koontz writes a lot a books with a dog character. He’s even written an autobiographical novel about his own dog, Trixie Koontz.

I’ve read one Dean Koontz book and it gave me nightmares. Dogs or not, I’ll probably stay away. I’m a wuss when it comes to horror.

When I was young, I read a book called Nop’s Trials. It was written from the dog’s point of view. For some reason it has stuck with me all of these years.

The one I remember most isn’t here:
Shaggy Dog. I was a young girl when I saw it. The man and the dog change bodies, one of the first of those kinds of movies.

Two of my very favorites aren’t on this list, but they’re pretty old.
You Never Can Tell
About a millionaire’s dog who’s murdered and goes to animal heaven. To find his killer and save the woman who took care of him, he’s given a chance to return as a human.
It’s a Dog’s Life
About a bull terrier who grows up in New York’s ‘The Bowery’ and winds up in a dog show during the early 1900s.
If you get a chance to see them, you won’t regret it.

I have read several books that feature a dog. I read Marley and Me which is a good one, I am not sure I can read another book where the dog dies! I hate that. I love the little chihuahua in Legally Blonde!

Hildie, I hated the ending of Marley.

I love dogs! I don’t tend, however, to like movies with dogs because they’re calculated to make me cry. :) But this is a good list of movies to check out; thanks!!

Me too. I definitely prefer happy endings.

June 14th, 2012 at 9:17 pm · Link
Lydia, this line always cracks me up. I usually chant it in unison with the baddie :)

I love this list. I watched Marley & Me and wished I hadn’t, I thought it was sad at the end…
One I would add to this list is K-9 starring James Belushi. That movie is soo darn funny. I love the things that dog does..lol

K9 is a great movie. I agree about Marley. I hated the ending, especially since our dog had died no long before. Never again!
