Recently I’ve been thinking about book covers. When it comes to book covers there are more opinions than people have different shaped noses. Some readers like clinch covers, others like covers with just the male or female character and some prefer covers bearing scenery or objects.
Thirteen Things About Rose and the Pop Star

1. Romance
2. Female chef
3. Pop star in hiding
4. Divorcee
5. New Zealand
6. Wedding
7. Younger Man/Older Woman
8. Sensual/Not erotic
9. Summer
10. Christmas
11. Picnics
12. Dreams/Ambition
13. Secrets/Disguise
Given the words above, what would you put on the cover for Rose and the Pop Star? What sort of covers do you like to see on books i.e. what cover would make you grab a book off a shelf?

Using those words as inspiration I think a cover with a winter, cold snow on the mountains type scenery in the background, like out a kitchen window. And inside the kitchen a female chef making Christmas cookies and smiling .
I like covers with faces. I loathe those headless covers where just a torso is there or half a head is missing.

I didn’t mind some of the headless covers, but like you, I prefer to see a face.

Ooh, I smell Rock Fiction… you know I’ll do a review and host you at West of Mars when this comes out, lady!

Thanks, Susan. It’s not a big rocker book, since the hero is in hiding and his career doesn’t figure hugely in the story. It’s what I’d call a sweet romance, more a love story.

I love this exercise.
I would use:
• a woman in a chef’s hat in a kitchen. I’d love it if she had a pot in her hand. –maybe she’s thinking of using it on him.
• the rocker behind her, maybe holding her. (I’m assuming he’s the one in disguise) so he needs some iconic clue to show he’s a rocker like a tattoo or sunglasses or something.

LOL I love the idea of the pot in hand. She does wave a whisk at him in the story.

This sounds like a fun read.
I like a man holding a woman in a hug or two people facing eachother close enough to kiss.

I quite like that image too. It’s very popular, that’s for sure. Thousands of Harlequin novels can’t be wrong!

I see a kitchen cover, her in her uniform and him holding her. Behind them the door is slightly open and a flashbulb going off, someone taking a picture.

That’s a great idea, Savannah. I like it. :)

I don’t really go for particular subjects on covers, like the clinch or person or whatever. Mostly it just needs to be esthetically appealing, or particularly appropriate to the book.

I agree. There’s nothing worst than a completely random cover that doesn’t depict anything in the book.

It seems so weird to me to think of Christmas in summer, though I know that is “normal” to you. To me, Christmas is snow and ice, not sand and beaches, LOL.

Very normal for us. Maybe one day I’ll actually have a white Christmas.

When you say baker & pop star in hiding. I picture the pop star with flour covering his face/identity lol I know I’m no help. Good luck and Happy T13!

LOL – that’s funny. I like it.

I would have a sexy guy holding a rose near his heart, with a snow-covered mountain in the background.

Aw, you can never go wrong with a rose.

Perhaps you can go for a woman holding a colorful mask, dressed sensually and a young muscled man hiding a rose behind his back, maybe with an electric guitar and music symbols tatted on his arm.

Nice! I like that idea. Hmm, I need to add a tattoo when I do my rewrites.

At a picnic in a wedding dress and sexy pose?

I like the idea of the rose on the cover, since I’m from the City of Roses (Portland, Ore.) Have fun with it, and happy TT!

Some of the New Zealand scenery in the background might be interesting.
