Baking Soda – The Must Have Kitchen Item!

Thursday Thirteen

Baking soda is one of the most useful things to have in the pantry. It’s also known as sodium bicarbonate and its chemical compound is NaHCO3

Thirteen Uses for Baking Soda

1. As an ingredient in cakes such as carrot cake or chocolate cake. Yum!

2. Sprinkle baking soda and spray over white vinegar to clean kitchen sinks.

3. Clean and whiten teeth – wet brush and dip in baking soda. Sprinkle over a little lemon juice and brush teeth as normal. You can use baking soda without the lemon juice, but I like the taste.

4. Add baking soda to the bath to relieve itchiness from chicken pox or measles.

5. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with your shampoo to remove product buildup in your hair.

6. Clean a burnt pot with a mixture of baking soda and water. Soak overnight.

7. Use a little baking soda on a damp cloth to clean and deodorize your fridge.

8. Sprinkle on carpet and vacuum up to deodorize.

9. Mix some with a little oatmeal and use as a facial scrub.

10. Remove strong odors from your hands by washing with baking soda and water.

11. Put a small container of baking soda in the fridge to absorb odors.

12. Put a small container of baking soda and add a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil to use as a room freshener.

13. Sprinkle some in your cat litter boxes to help absorb the odor

I use baking soda all the time in my cleaning and cooking.

Do you use baking soda often? Do you have any added uses for baking soda?

Oh, you are right. I use baking soda for lots of things. One being scrubbing my kitchen sink. It’s also good to use if you run out of toothpaste. Happy TT!

This is great. I actually have 3 small books that tell of all the uses for salt, vinegar and baking soda. Very useful tips. Happy T13!

I use some of these, like sprinkling on the carpet before vacuuming, and putting a box in the fridge. I thinkI’ll try adding it to my shampooing to remove build up.

I’m going to try that baking soda and vinegar thing on the kitchen sink right now. It needs something.

I keep a box in both the fridge and the freezer. Used in a cool bath, it will also help take the sting out of bad sunburns. Glad I haven’t needed it for that in several years!

What a fun list! I love baking soda. Mix with a little water, enough to make a paste, and it’s a good itch-remedy for bug bites or welts.

It’s also good in the bath with other salts (Dead Sea salt, Ceara salt, and Epsom is a good mix), for a relaxing bath.

    Happy TT!

Great list Shelley! I never knew you could use Baking Soda for some of these things.

What I use Baking Soda most for is an Acid Reflux or Heartburn relievers. You add 1-2 teaspoons in a glass, fill it up with lukewarm water and drink. The dissolved baking soda coats the stomach and wala heartburn’s gone.

I’ve only used it for baking though I did know about being able to use it on teeth.
Did not know about the shampoo part or any of the others…will certainly give them a try

I like baking soda a lot, and I hadn’t thought of some of these uses before. My favorites uses for it are brushing my teeth and getting rid of odors.

There are so many great uses for baking soda I had problems deciding which ones to use in my TT. I have to say the kid in me just loves the way the baking soda fizzes up when combined with vinegar or lemon juice. I never get tired of that!

mix baking soda and dish washing liquid into a paste and use as an awesome glass-cooktop cleaner. Way cheaper (and more effective) than commercial stuff.
