Han Solo and a Gold Bikini!

My special guest today is fellow Carina Press author, Kim Knox. Aside from having several publishers in common, Kim shares a release date with me since her futuristic romance Gambit is out on 20 September at Carina Press. It sounds like an awesome read so head over to the Carina store and preorder your copy now! Today Kim is talking about films and inspiration for her upcoming release. Don’t forget to comment on her post to go into a draw to win one of her backlist.

There are some films I can watch over and over. My other half can testify to my current night time obsession with Hot Fuzz. Really, what’s not to love about bromance heavily laced with guns and just enough gore to make you wince? Something about the structure, the humour doesn’t get old for me. My other half may tell a different story.

Then there are the films that are a slow boil. I didn’t like the remake of Clash of the Titans when I first saw it at the cinema. Admittedly I was crushed up at the front of the theatre and I’d made the egregious error of viewing it in 3D…but I watched it again at home and enjoyed it more. I could truly appreciate a muscled hero in a leather skirt. Yes, I have also watched Gladiator a lot, too.

PhotobucketWith children around, I can’t indulge in anything rated above PG and their repeated favourites of The Gruffalo and Dangermouse can grate a little. And the less said about Count Duckula the better.

We do have common ground though. All of us can watch films four, five and six of the Star Wars Trilogy ad nauseum. They appreciate spaceships and aliens and things generally exploding and I can appreciate Han Solo. A lot.

He was also the spark behind my novel, Gambit. Well him and Leia in her slave girl costume. My mind was drifting as I watched Return of the Jedi — the scene in Jabba’s court — and I got to thinking that the gold bikini was wasted on Leia…and really Han should be Jabba’s pet. The idea of Jabba as my heroine was a little off putting. So I swapped in a woman…who was a pilot and a hustler. One who enjoyed her men wrapped in little more than golden strings. I also gave her a collar and a leash for her new flesh-pet…and Chae Beyon was born.

I do point out Gambit to my other half as proof that my addiction to some films does mean I am actually working. I’m still not sure he believes me.

So does anyone else have a film or films that they can watch over and over?

CONTEST: Everyone who answers Kim’s question will go into a draw to win a download from Kim’s backlist. Kim will be back to pick the winner.

Purchase Gambit

Blurb:

Captain Chae Beyon is a hustler, a mercenary pilot, a wounded woman who prefers her men to be easily thrown aside.

Daned Traern is a first-caste Ladaian bound by tradition and DNA to protect his race. He’s willing to align himself with the hot space captain if she’ll transport him home in time to ensure the right candidate is crowned-and thus prevent a bloody war.

Disguised as Chae’s sex toy, Daned is erotically bound to her through living gold, alien tech designed to increase pleasure. When he frees himself, their passion only increases…but succumbing to temptation will bind them together-permanently.

But there’s more at stake than their needs. As Chae is dragged into a world of insane princes and sentient stones, hired killers hound them across the quadrant.

And then, as only her lousy luck would have it, Chae must choose between the good of the galaxy and her own heart…

Bio:

Kim is published with Ellora’s Cave, Samhain Publishing, Liquid Silver Books, Loose Id and soon with Carina Press. She lives on an ancient boundary line, once marked by a Neolithic burial tomb. The tomb’s now a standing stone circle–thank the Georgians for that one–and stirs her mind with thoughts of history and ancient myths. She mixes the essence of the past into fantasy, along with the essential mix of magic and sex. She also writes science fiction romance, pushing out into the far future with effortlessly sexy men and the women who can’t resist them.

I have a lot of movies I watch over and over, especially at Halloween and Christmas. The Crow is one and Scrooge is another. I could make a very long list. lol

Gambit sounds great. Love the cover.

I love Hot Fuzz! My husband introduced me to it and I thought I’d hate it (b/c I hate Shawn of the Dead) but omg, that movie is too funny and gory. It’s the perfect mix.

I can watch Love Actually, Lucky Number Slevin, and Spy Game over and over. :)

Great post Kim! Star Wars is one of my favorite series of movies I love to watch. I just can’t seem to get over how cute the ewoks are. :) I also like watching X-Men and Underworld. I need some kick butt action. :D Early congrats on your release!

Ooh, the book sounds hot, Kim. I’m a big fan of Serenity and the Firefly series. I love the characters. I watch them over and over again, much to the horror of my loving family. lol

@NJ Walters My mother watches Scrooge every year. The Alistair Sim one, in B&W. Not the colourised one *shudder* ;-) And yes, the cover gods have been kind with Gambit. My other half took a postcard of it into work to show off.

@Katie Reus I’m not a lover of Shaun of the Dead either. A little too *much* zombie for me. I loved Spaced though, which is what drove me to watch Hot Fuzz.

@Becki Thanks :) Oh, yes, X-Men. I keep meaning to catch X-Men Origins: Wolverine if only for Liev Schreiber…

Like Becky, I love to rewatch Underworld & of course, Star Wars. Lately I’ve added Star Trek to the “can watch over and over and over” list.

    Oh, and Firefly/Serenity.

    and Princess Bride
    Pride and Prejudice.

I could go on. I do love to watch movies to put me in the mood for a story.

There are two ways to get me to auto-buy a book. One is to reference Harrison or Han Solo. The other is to add “by Kim Knox” at the end of it. But I have missed a couple here an there because she writes so fast! So I’m shamelessly entering the contest…

    Other than Star Wars…
I can watch the Princess Bride over and over. Also for some reason Bloodsport is endlessly entertaining for me: “I break you…like I break your friend…”

Movies I love to watch over and over …
    Grease (I know I’m a geek)
    Dirty Dancing
    50 First Dates
    Star Wars series

There are more, but I’ll stop there. I don’t generally like musical in movie form, but the music from the first two are classics IMO.

The premise to the new book sounds wonderful Kim. Your world building skills are amazing.

@ChrisQ @Ella Drake Will I be kicked out of the SFR clubhouse for not being that much into Firefly and Serenity? Sorry :(
And Ella, Pride and Prejudice? Definitely marked up their with marathon watching sessions. The BBC 1996 version. :)

@Jeannie Lin Aww thanks, Jeannie :) And Princess Bride is there too for me. I saw an action figure of the Dread Pirate Roberts last week. I was so tempted. I was good, though and bought a book instead.

@Nina Pierce Thanks, Nina :) I think I’ve been though a Dirty Dancing marathon once or twice myself.

There are a couple of movies that I can watch over & over:

To Kill A Mockingbird (it’s a compulsion to watch if it’s on like Mel Gibson’s charcter in Conspiracy Theory w/ Catcher in the Rye…lol)
    Dirty Dancing
    Sean of the Dead
GI Jane (the ULTIMATE “Girl Power” movie, especially the end)
A Christmas Story (I LOVE Ralphie!!)
    Nat’l Lampoon’s Christmas vacation

    There’s more, but I’ll stop rambling…lol

I’m another fan of Love Actually. Love that move, especially at Christmas time.
I also like The Mummy and the Indianna Jones movies.

I keep meaning to watch Firefly again. At present I’m rewatching the Sharpe movies, which slots nicely into my historical mood.

First let me say that I can’t wait to read Gambit!!

Now, for movies that I can watch over and over…

Well, What’s Up Doc? with Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’Neal comes to mind. Laugh Out Loud Funny with a bit of romance.

Or there’s the oldie but goodie 7 Brides For 7 Brothers. Maybe a little cheesy, but so good.

And Samurai X, the Driectior’s Cut. Anime done really right.

All of the movies I watch over and over are produced by Pixar.

However, I am grateful for your Hot Fuzz addiction.

Hmmmm…. over and over you say? Well, I love to watch Gidget & Gidget Goes Hawaiian, then probably Twilight & New Moon, Sabrina (Remake w/ Harrison Ford-YUM!)… Oh and the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth -drool).

But with a 5 y/o I see a lot of the Disney movies over and over and over. But she has recently found my Anime collection and so we’ve watched a lot of Dragonball Z lately, as well as Pilot Candidate & Inuyasha.

Love the sound of the story :) And love the title!!

PS. Hope all is well, Shelley, on the bottom (or top) of the world!

I love watching Star Trek movies over and over again. Especially any with Spock in them :D

Nice title on your book, I’ve added it to my wishlist as it sounds like a great read.

LOL! Kim, our family has watched and rewatched the entire Star Wars collection of movies (plus the Clone Wars ones now). Other movies I find rewatchable are the Pixar ones :) And left to their own devices, my kids would happily watch and rewatch Despicable Me :) Congrats on Gambit! Is it a stand-alone?

Toni – we’re in Auckland, the other end of the country so didn’t feel a thing. They were certainly lucky no one died in the quake.

@caity M My other half is a major Kelly’s Hero fan.

@Tamsin Oh, yes Raiders and Bond. ITV is showing all of the Bond films every weekend. It’s fun.

@Kate Pearce Sense and Sensibility. I love the Emma T version. Alan Rickman *sigh*…and Emma T’s reaction to finding out Hugh Grant is *not* married…I’ve Youtubed that scene a few times :D

@Courtney S – Another mention of Dirty Dancing… I may have to dig that out again.

@Shelley I saw Love Actually by accident – it was in a selection of DVDs in a holiday cottage in Wales. The owner seemed to have a thing for Hugh Grant. :)
I’m glad you’re okay after the earthquake and that there were only a few injuries. Incredibly lucky.

@Maddy Barone. Thanks, Maddy :) And 7 Brides I watched a lot when I was younger. Whether I could do it now without a lot of shouting at the screen, I don’t know! lol

@Hailey Edwards. Yes, Pixar and Dreamworks…and if really *really* pushed, Disney. At the minute, Over the Hedge is on for the fifth time in 3 days O.o

@Amy W ooo Sabrina. I loved that film. I still haven’t caught the original though.

@Toni Anderson Thanks :) I think I’ve watched the first and third LOTRs a lot. Though the third film does break the other half into a shouting match about Saruman and Grima Wormtongue (sp?) have not taken over the shire *eye roll*

@Ilona Thanks :) I’ve done that too. I really liked the remake, though I have to admit the new Lt Uhuru irks me lol

@Fedora Thanks. Yes, Gambit’s a standalone. I have the idea for a sequel though.
I want to see Despicable Me. It’s not out here till October :(

Thanks for all the comments. You’ve reminded me of a lot of films I want to watch again. My family may not thank you for another Pride and Prejudice marathon though… Its title music does calm the children down. It’s like womb music, *grin*

I’ll also pick the winner of one of my backlist in the next comment :)
