Contest: Blue Lady

Blue Lady Blue Lady, book ten in my Middlemarch Mates series is due out on 11 August at Ellora’s Cave. I’m giving away a download to one commenter.

Tell me what you do to cure the blues. What do you do to cheer yourself up when you’re feeling down in the dumps?

I usually go for a walk or find my husband and pester him. He has a way of making me laugh that always cheers me up. He also brings home chocolate and chocolate makes everything feel better!

I’ll choose the winner tomorrow night (New Zealand time) and announce it in the comments section.

Here’s the blurb for Blue Lady:

Saber and Emily are longtime mates. Happiness has been theirs, until the tragic loss of their unborn baby.

Saber is desperate. Emily has shut him out, wallowing in depression. They inhabit the same house, but his loving mate has withdrawn, and he wants his happy, matchmaking woman back. It’s time to up the ante. Armed with a bag of sex toys from his wild twin brothers and a tropical island setting, Saber is determined to seduce his mate to his way of thinking, to drive the blues away, and he won’t take no for an answer.

Hey, I’m like you, I pester my husband too! But usually I go shopping. Even if I don’t buy anything, looking and trying on clothes, shoes, etc just blows away my blues.

Reading is number one on my list. Then there’s taking magnesium; peace and quiet; writing; drawing; crocheting; walking (is this Thursday 13? Oh, good, I can stop.)

When I have the blues, I usually sing them out first which sometimes leads to decent songs: ‘Angels (I’ll Never Know)’ and ‘Smoke Follows Beauty’ are two of our best to date….

Otherwise, listening to a variety of music, reading, and going to the beach to hear/see the ocean also help the blues melt away…

Congrats on the release, Shelley. Middlemarch is a great series, and it’s good to see these two back again in Blue Lady.

When I have blue times in my life, I try to meditate and focus on the happy things. It’s not always easy when life throws you you many curves.

When I have the blues I turn to my romantic comedy books and they usually put me in a good mood or if I can’t decide on a book – I’ll watch an old I Love Lucy episode on TV as Lucille Ball always made me laugh.

    Congratulations on the new release!

I actually make no effort to cheer myself up. I just ride it out, knowing eventually my mood will change.

LOL – Nessa, now you don’t have to think up a topic.

Thanks, Anny. It was fun to spend time with Emily and Saber again.

Dani – singing is a great idea. I always take my iPod when I go for a walk. I like listening to music.

Kaye – that’s true. I think the fast pace of our lives these days makes for the blues at times. It’s incredibly difficult to keep up!

Maria – thanks. Laughing is a good way of beating the blues. I dare anyone to remain straight-faced when Lucy is around. She was so wacky!

Hi, Shelley! I’ve been fortunate not to have too many blue times, but I do tend to go to the same things when those times come–walks, especially outside when the weather allows; talking with friends, or not talking and just hanging out (although I have to admit that life doesn’t allow for much of this type of time!); journaling, or at least writing out some of what’s on my mind or heart; doing something for someone else, whether just a note to my husband or making something for a neighbor or cleaning out some stuff to donate; indulging in comfort foods (which definitely includes chocolate and french fries, although not together!); indulging in comfort reads, such as ones by SEP, Jenny Crusie, Kleypas, Julia Quinn, Shelly Laurenston, and others that get that heartfelt story with the touch of humor combo right :)

Congrats on Blue Lady, BTW, Shelley–this sounds like a topic/relationship that many readers will find close to their hearts :)

Sounds great Shelley. I too, loved Saber and Emily the first time around. So I can’t wait to read this story.

    Congrats on the release.

This sounds really great. I haven’t read you before, but I think I must!

When I get the blues, I try to force myself to exercise. Running and yoga are my two favorite forms. Endorphins are a wonderful thing! If I just can’t do it, I tend to go for the bowl-of-ice-cream-and-a-good-movie route. That works too… :)

When I get the blues I call my Mother, then I go outside and sit in my backyard, think about all I have, go back in MY house into my craftsroom & make one of my creations (hats, stuffdies etc.) they usually lift my spirits.
I LOVE your Middlemarch Mates Series!
Blue Lady sounds like a winner too.

When I get the blues what I use as my pick-me-up depends on the severity. If it’s just a case of “Wow, that’s sad”, I may just eat some chocolate or have some ice cream. When it’s laying in bed w/ the covers over my head bad, I usually inhale anything chocolate I can get my hands on (I joke that it’s cheaper than Xanax) & then watching movies (The John Hughes collection is a fave).

What I do is try to go out and see a movie, that changes my mood, failing that I put on some music and dance, failing that reading or watching a favorit movie, changes my mood and makes me think of other think besides what is bugging me :)

When I have the blues I usually find a good book and read but if that doesn’t work I’ll get on the computer and play games usually on or the other will cheer me up.
