I’ve been writing all day, and when it came time to do a blog post my mind was like a blank canvas.
“What should I blog about?” I asked my husband during our evening walk with Patch.
“Why don’t you ask everyone what they have for dinner? How do they decide what to have and do they get sick of trying to think what to have for dinner like we do?”
“Good idea,” I said, desperate for any type of topic.
What to have for dinner seems to be a never ending topic at our house. We tend to eat the same things all the time, which can get a little boring. Our standby dishes are risotto and pasta. Lately we’ve been eating quiche quite a bit and, since it’s winter, we have roast veges and cauliflower or broccoli cheese. If it’s just me for dinner, I’ll have soup or baked beans on toast. We like to make our own pizzas, using tortillas as the base if we’re in a hurry.
There aren’t a lot of options for fast food around here. We tend to cook at home because it’s much cheaper. We don’t eat out very often these days either–we’re busy saving for our next holiday.
Who decides what to eat for dinner at your house? Do you tend to eat the same things each week? Is deciding what to have sometimes more trouble than the actual cooking?

I was the decision maker about meals for the first thirty years of our marriage. Then last year, after he lost his job, hubby took over the kitchen, lock, stock and barrel. See me doing the dance of joy?
We still have those moments of…
What do you want?
I don’t know, what do you want?
I asked you first.
The good news is that the final decision isn’t mine anymore.
And, as long as I don’t have to decide what to have and I don’t have to cook it , I only have positive comments to make about dinner. lol

I’ve been trying to be better at dinner, and saving money is the number 1 goal in my house with young kids.
I try to stick to things which can be cooked in a crockpot, but are healthy. I don’t want to eat Kraft Dinner and hot dogs forever.
There are days when I’m wiped, and my DH will whip together something like Kraft Dinner and Hot Dogs, but for the most part I am a crockpot cooker.
Also most of my recipes come off the Kraft Canada website which does help with the budgeting issue.
Last night I dumped a tin of spaghetti sauce, half a jar of my MIL’s stewed tomatoes, frozen meatballs, chopped garlic, zucchini and mushrooms in my crock pot and slow cooked it all day for a yummy hearty spaghetti sauce.

I do the vast majority of the cooking in my household and I am thoroughly fed up with it. I’ve tried to get the kids to take over, but they get stumped so easily and won’t plan ahead. They put stuff like “ice cream” on the grocery list.

I live at home with my elderly parents and my mom does the dinner cooking during the work week- which is great for me and bad for her…we have the same dilema in that we seem to eat the same things day in and out…we do use our crockpot for some meals and now that it’s summer we will use our bbq grill to cook some meats…the side items are usually some kind of vegtable and some kind of starch item but that is difficult too because mom is diabetic…so yeah…dinner is always a discussion topic..lol

Donna – I’m right with you about the decision and cooking deserving wholesome praise! My husband does most of the cooking and he’s good at it. He lives for praise and I’m not shy giving it because he produces such good meals.

Amy – aren’t crockpots wonderful? there’s nothing better than walking into a kitchen after a hard day of work and smell dinner patiently waiting.

Maria – I make things difficult because I don’t eat meat. I do eat fish but I’m just as happy eating vegetables. When we cook we try to make something that works with meat of some description on the side to keep my hubby happy.

Since I live alone it’s easy…I decide what I want to eat for dinner or if I even want dinner…sometimes if I eat a big lunch then I don’t want much at suppertime so I’ll just eat a snack. I like to try new things so don’t always have the same kinds of food every week.

I grocery shop every ten days and stack the meats in the freezer so that things are alternating. Then whatever is on top, I take out and make. That way I don’t have to pick something, I just make whatever is on top. lol
I always go shopping with a list so I don’t forget to get the things to go with the meats. Tonight I took out kielbasa and am making sauteed green peppers, onion and mushrooms with some white rice and mushroom gravy.

This is an on going battle in our house. Emma and I have fairly similar tastes but hubby is sometimes not in agreement with us. Other times hubby and I have a meal planned that Emma will usually eat but that day she’s being stubborn. Blah! I also don’t like to cook. Bake, absolutely, I’ll spend hours making the perfect pastry, cake, pie, etc. But if dinner takes me longer than an hour to make it’s not happening.
The lid of our crock-pot broke and hubby has been promising a replacement for about 5 years now. Sigh. Those things are marvels.

I’ve always done the majority of the cooking,
but with crockpots, microwaves, and other
kitchen aids the load has eased up. I join
with all of you in that deciding what to fix is the main problem. Thanks to Amy, I have
already decided on spaghetti for tomorrow’s dinner!

Jackie – living alone would definitely make the choice easier. Sometimes I don’t feel like eating, but we still have to think about what to have for dinner.

Mary – that’s a good idea! My husband keeps telling me we need a freezer. We only have the small one at the bottom of our fridge.
Amy – I love baking too. I guess the larger a family is the more difficult the dinner decision becomes.

Pat – I’m glad we inspired a dinner idea.
