Brains v Beauty

I scanned the magazines in a bookshop today while I was waiting to meet a friend. I noticed a common thread in this month’s magazines.

One magazine cover shouted in bold letters, “Are Brains the New Sexy?” (well, as much as a magazine can shout). At least two other magazines included articles in a similar vein, discussing the benefits of brains over beauty.

I think beautiful people do start out with an advantage in life. There are certainly some industries where beauty is considered a necessity and imperfections are fixed with a scalpel. I like a face with a bit of character, and I think a sincere smile makes anyone look beauitiful. Personally, I think someone with intelligence is very sexy. Looks fade, but a good brain gets even better with time–sort of like a bottle of fine red wine.

What do you think? Brains or beauty or both? Are brains the new sexy?

I’ve always been drawn to guys with biiig… Brains. LOL!

Seriously, if a guy is hot but stupid, he loses something in my eyes. If a guy is average-looking but smart, I’m still attracted.

Hot *and* smart? I married him. ;)

A since smile is what I notice first. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I like a person with substance. They don’t necessarily have to be book smart, but there has to be more to them than just pretty packaging.

I think brains have always been sexy, people just don’t talk about it. I had a friend who was completely model hot. She was always single. She dated but couldn’t get any relationship to last. Why? Because she was dumb as a brick. They guys always said, not to her face of course, that she’s great to look at but as soon as she she opened her mouth they knew spending the rest of their life with her would be torture.

You can be the most attractive 80 year old in the world, but you’d still be 80. Looks-wise, you’ll never be able to compete with a 20 year old. Intelligence lasts and it what makes a person truly interesting.

I think it’s a bit of both. The attraction is what lures you to the person and the rest is decided by things you like about them (including a brain!).

It’s a little bit of both, but if a good looking guy comes off as a dumbbutt or mean spirited or any number of other turn offs, then it really doesn’t matter what he looks like.

We all see beauty as different things though, so one person might find another attracive while others don’t. But for me a nice person is better than a good looking one.

I like people that are smart, as you stated looks fade…I have to be engaged mentally to consider someone sexy!

Kimberly – I’m pretty sure I married him too.

NJ – I think a smile really does transform a face, and it’s something I always notice first.

Jennifer – I’d have to agree with that. I definitely need someone to challenge me and discuss things with. A brain is definitely sexy.

I remember a scene in Legally Blonde that always makes me laugh. It’s at the start when Elle says she’s going to Harvard Law school.

A guy says, “You got into Harvard Law school?”

And Elle wrinkles her nose and says, “Why? Was it meant to be hard?”

I agree with Mel. Beauty fades but Brains are forever. And a beautiful smile is a sight to behold.
