I decided to keep to the whale theme of my Snippet Saturday post below, and my animal shot for this week’s Camera Critters is a breaching humpback whale. This shot was taken in Alaska a few years ago. The humpback whales are amazing creatures and can be very curious, coming right up to the boat and doing lots of spyhopping to see what the strange humans are doing. I’ve been lucky enough to see them in the Southern hemisphere as well, and highly recommend the experience should you ever get a chance to go whale watching.

When we put the “Jabiru Venture” on site in the Timor Sea in 1985 we were visited by a pod of whales on their migration north. They were curious about us and were still dropping in for a visit in 1997 when I left the Timor Sea. The water is crystal clear and they used to swim through the gap between our bow and the spar buoy (about forty feet). I always took time off when they arrived and watched them until they disappeared, usually an hour or two later.

Savannah – it’s pure luck that we managed to get such a great photo. They’re amazing creatures.
Amy – that sounds amazing. I’ve gone whale watching at Hervey Bay quite a few times. The whale watching is usually really good there.
Joy – whale watching has produced some of my most special memories. They really are beautiful creatures.

Amazing photo! I’ve been on about 4 different whale watches off the coasts of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine. Saw humpbacks each time. Amazingly unbelievable creatures!
