Back in Routine

Mr. Munro went back to work today, and I went back to writing. I’ve had a great day and a reworked story will be heading to my editor’s inbox later this evening. It’s good to be back in a routine of sorts, although we’re off for a couple of days toward the end of the week to celebrate hubby’s birthday. The forecast is for sunny weather, which will be good. We’re taking the train to the National Park in the middle of the North Island. I thought it would take around three hours. I don’t know why I thought that. Mr. Munro informed me it will take around five hours to get to our destination. I mumbled about making sure my iPod and PDA were charged, although the scenery during the ride is stunning. New Zealand is a pretty country. Anyhow, my point is that I like being in a routine. I like knowing what I’m doing, and I’m mostly a creature of habit.

The wee dog isn’t very well again. We took her to the vet and have some new pills for her to take. Her hind quarters aren’t obeying commands so she’s walking like a drunken sailor at times. Poor wee thing. Hopefully the medication will improve things. She’s fifteen now and unfortunately age gets us all. Her drunken walking didn’t stop her from eating, however. When she stops eating I know things are really bad.

For visiting writers: how is the writing going? For all visitors: do you like a routine or do you thrive on the unexpected?

Have a great time at the park, and happy birthday to hubby! :)

The writing is going. Not as smoothly as I hoped, but I think it will get better once I’m past this one section.

Shelley – I used to think of myself as spontaneous, that ‘routine’ was a bad word that stifled everything good. I don’t know if it’s age or kids, but now I THRIVE on routine. Crave it. NEED IT like I need coffee in the morning.
Especially since i’m juggling 4 people’s schedules, I like the Mon-Fri routine that allows me to know who’s doing what and when. These holiday times throw me off.

As for writing – due to having kids home and hubby’s erratic work schedule, NO writing was done over Christmas holidays. I’m so glad it’s Monday, January 5th and we’re back to routine :)

    Hi Shelley,
Sorry your baby is feeling poorly. Not much you can do except keep them comfortable.

    Ref: routine
I love doing things on the fly, but they have to be in and among my scheduled routine. As long as my structure is in place, the unexpected is a bonus and not a pain.

I thrive on routine, up to the point where it gets boring, then I like to break out of it and do something spontaneous–which for me entails declaring a day off and spending it reading, or going to town (3 hour round trip) and buying a Starbucks and a new book–as if I didn’t have stacks and stacks already of unread ones. At the moment, the writing is going great. Could be because I’m working on a MMF story, my favorite kind!

    Hi Shelley,
We were also back at work today. A shock to the system. lol
I thrive on being organised but I like the odd surprise here and there.

I hope your little dog gets better soon. :)

    Suz :)

I’m glad te rest of you tend to like routine, too. I was thinking I’d reached old fuddy-duddy status. If I have, then I’m not alone!

Sorry to hear about your dog, hope she’s feeling better soon.

I write whenever I feel a need or if my daily quota hasn’t been met…the quota is small to encourage me to write–300 words. Otherwise I end up getting on a whirlwind and write for hours, often into the wee hours of the night. Sometimes I can get 10,000 words that way. I find working on different areas of my work in progress goes better than if I try to write from the beginning. Sometimes what I think is my beginning isn’t and something else goes in there instead.

I’m a very “go with the flow” type of person. but lately when it comes to writing I need a schedule not of time but what I will focus on today… research, character development, blogs, scene writing etc. As for storyline I am a plotster…

My favorite quote describing it is “Writing is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.”~E.L. Doctorow
