Restless This week’s special guest is Nicole Austin. At her website Nicole says, “A passion for erotic romance led to her creation of sizzling characters and boundary pushing stories.” Her wonderful stories are published with Ellora’s Cave and Samhain Publishing.

I had the pleasure of reading some of Nicole’s books during the Christmas holidays and let me tell you, she writes a very hot contemporary story. I loved her characters and adored the Western settings. I know she writes in other genres as well, in fact that’s what Nicole is talking about today.

She’s also giving away a print copy of her upcoming release, Tamara’s Spirit, which isn’t due out until February. That’s right. The winner will score a copy of Nicole’s book before it hits the stores. As usual all you need to do is contribute to the discussion by posting a comment. Don’t forget to check back the next day to see if you’re the winner.

Hey, everyone! I hope your new year is off to a great start. Thanks for letting me hijack your blog for the day, Shelley. Makes me feel naughty.

There are many good reasons the author group I belong to, The Hussies™, call me the Naughty Hussy and refer to me as being scandalous. *g* You never know what I’ll decide to talk about. Good or bad, this could go either way so I’ll let you decide, but I’m feeling a bit random today. I’ll try and stick to a bit about myself and diversity in writing.

I started writing out of frustration. Yup, it’s true. I got sick and tired of reading romances but missing out on the good parts. Romance authors built this wonderful sexual tension between the hero and heroine, taking the reader along for the ride, only to slam the bedroom door in your face just when things start to get really hot. How rude! Since I believe in and long for happily ever after stories—just with all the hot and juicy naughty bits included—the natural choice for me was erotic romance.

Being an erotic romance author is soooo much fun! OMG! Would have started writing sooner if I’d known. The research alone…let’s just say that if anyone in the government got their hands on my laptop and saw the subjects I look up, they’d lock me away. Heck, they’d probably label me as a sexual predator or something. LOL!

Since I hate to be pigeonholed into one neat little category and have highly eclectic tastes, I play the field and write stories in a variety of sub-genre. Wherever the characters lead is where I go. The only stories that scare me are historicals. Mess up the details in those and the readers will have your head. Uh…yeah, I kind of like my head right where it is between my shoulders, thanks! Lately, I’ve been dabbling in creating my own worlds. Whew, it’s a lot of work but also very addictive.

My published books run the gamut. BDSM, Contemporary, Interracial, Ménage, Paranormal, Shape shifters, and Western. I even have a Vampire pending contract, along with Fantasy and Sci-Fi books in the works. As I said, I get around.

Today is an exciting day for me since I have a Quickie releasing from Ellora’s Cave. Restless is a Contemporary / Interracial. While it’s the sequel to Enough, both are stand alone titles. Jamie Stratham is a globe-trotting rich boy. Rachel Davis is a small town teacher. Under the bright lights of Vegas, these two opposites find some common ground. And you know what they say about Vegas… *g*

Okay, enough of this shameless self-promo and back to the topic. How do you feel about authors dabbling in different sub-genre? Do you prefer knowing exactly what you’ll get with each book from an author or do you like it when we change things up? Come on, I know you must have an opinion on the topic. Do tell. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

To encourage a response and so I’m not here talking to myself, listening to the crickets, I’m offering up a prize to be randomly drawn from those who leave comments. Through no dubious means of my own, I managed to get contraband copies of one of my books going into print. Hey, it’s not my fault Amazon sent out my pre-ordered copies of Tamara’s Spirit ahead of the February release date. I’m innocent of any wrong doing, at least in this situation. *wink* Either Shelley or I will announce the winner’s name tomorrow. Good luck!

Thanks again for letting me hang out with y’all today. I had a great time!

  1. Hi Nicole,
when I like an author she can write in any genre she wants to, usually all books are great! Sometimes of course if the genres are for ex. historical or paranormal it helps when the authors use different names…

  2. yes If i love a author I will follow them and try out whatever they write. very few ever disappointed with. I am not so sure I would follow the author changing thier name though. i did that once and was horrible. didnt like it at all. so dunno as long as they were writting under the name I loved them writting as, i would follow them. lead I will follow lol

  3. Congratulations on your new release today, Nic!

As an author, I like to dabble in different genres, keeps me fresh. As a reader, I don’t mind if an author tries different genres. If I like the writer, I’m likely to try any book they write.

  4. I love when authors write in more than one genre. It means more great books for me. I seriously will read any genre. I love paranormals, westerns, contemps, romantic suspense, fantasy, sci/fi, and historicals. Congrats on the new release! It sounds great! I recently read Savannah’s Vision and loved it.

  5. What *do* they say about Vegas??

  6. When I like an author I will usually get whatever books they have out regardless of genre. Besides there is very little I wont at least try to read in regards to genre. I might find some I don’t enjoy but so far I haven’t found any yet.

At least I am never short of reading material

  7. Yeah…I’d follow a favorite author anywhere. I can’t recall being disappointed.

  8. I especially loved the excerpt of “The Boy Next Door.”

  9. Congrats on your new release today, Nic.
I’ve always read lots of different genres because I get bored reading the same thing all the time. I’m comfortable reading any genre and sensuality level and tend to follow favorite authors where ever they go. Not that I’m stalking or anything!!

  10. If I like an author, I will read any genre she or he chooses to write in.

  11. I will follow an author to other genres. Many times that’s how I’m introduced to a new genre.

  12. Nic, First congrats on yet another amazing book.
If I enjoy an author I read their work. As I am a reviewer I find I like differnt genres. A good healthy dose is just the right ingredent I think.

  13. I’m going to have to add some of these books to the TBR pile. :D

  14. I don’t know if I would follow an author. It would depend on what genre she’s switching too. I like many different genres when reading, but there are a few I hate to read and if she/he switched to one of those then I wouldn’t follow.

  15. Wow! That’s for all the great responses and congrats everyone!

Eve and Tina! I don’t know that I could handle having another pseudonym. I get confused enough as it is with only one. LOL!

I agree with what seems to be the majority opinion! I’ll follow a favorite author wherever they go. :D

    LOL Jenyfer.

Thanks Jane! I can’t wait until The Boy Next Door comes out in print within the next few months.

I hope you enjoy the book, Amy!

  16. Yep! I’ll definitely switch genres if it’s an author I love. I didn’t think I would like paranormal, but when I saw Linda Howard wrote something for the Nocturne series I ended up becoming hooked and finding other authors I liked in that genre. One thing I do prefer though, is if an author is going to write on two very different spectrums (for example, YA and erotica) I like them to use different names so I know exactly what I’m getting.

  17. Hi Nicole,
I’m glad to hear that another of your ebooks will be put into print. If I like the author I’ll read whatever genre they decide to write in. This way it helps with finding more genres to read and more authors to read. The only complaint is I spend more money when I follow the author around and find new authors to buy from.lol

  18. Hi Nicole–If I find an author I like then I follow them where ever they go. I’ve found that a lot times somehow that will lead me to other authors I didn’t know about and then I end up with more books on my Mt. TBR. Not complaining though, I’m set if we ever get a good snow storm this winter!

  19. Linda Howard could write a non-fiction history book and I’d read it, Katie. LOL! I agree about the different pseudonyms when writing something like YA or Inspirational and Erotics. Definitely needs a dividing line there so readers don’t get a major shock thinking they’ve bought one kind of book and get something totally different.

Isn’t it crazy, Sheila and Laura. My autobuy list is huge and my genre choices have definitely expanded by following authors I like. I need a good blizzard with no power for about a week to catch up on some of my massive tbr list. Don’t think that’s gonna happen here in Florida though. *g*

  20. Hey naughty Nic! I see you’re getting around lately. Not taking after your characters now are you? ROFL, just kidding.

I actually like when authors change up their genres. It shows that the author has a great talent to write across the board and not just get stuck in a rut in one genre. It also gives the reader the ability to read another genre and see if they like it or not and it just might introduce them to other authors that they never would have read before.

  21. Hey, Dani! Umm…no comment. LOL!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your opinion. :D

  22. I threw all the names in a bowl and randomly chose one. The winner of my contraband book is …

    Larena Wirum

Congrats, Larena! Email me with your snail mail addy nicole@nicoleaustin.net and I’ll get the book in the mail.

Thanks for stopping by and making this a great day everyone! I appreciate all you honest comments. :D

  23. Absolutely, I would and have followed a favorite author into a another genre. Branching out and trying something new is a good thing.
