Both Sharpe and Hornblower fight to win. There the similarities end. Hornblower returned to Spain and captivity rather than break his given word and agonized when he had to give his word as a gentleman to save the world from a third attempt to rule the world by Napoleon (see "St Elizabeth of Hungary" in "Hornblower in the West Indies")
Sharpe deliberately flouts the opinions of others because it enhances his belief he is an outsider(true). Hornblower believes every friend would see him as a failure if they only knew the truths he knows about himself.
Both series touched where they fitted and ignored both storytelling and logic where they didn't-which was very annoying in the carefully researched Hornblower series, whose exploits were replicated by real life seamen of the time.

Sorry about the other remark--you touched a nerve.

Amy - do you think so? Both Sharpe and Hornblower are loyal to their friends, do the right thing, don't always follow the rules but seem to squeak through. I would have said there are lots of similarities in the characters. I've read some of the Sharpe books but not the Hornblower ones. I'm not sure how close the TV series follows the Hornblower books.

I'm glad times have changed. I think anyone who enters the military and fights for their country and peace is a hero.

The contrast between Sharpe and Hornblower is so great that I wonder if it's not the actors rather than the characters you've fallen in love with.
For me, I remember when the Army ordered soldiers not to wear their uniforms outside the barrack gates in Australia because it might offend the sensibilities of the Anti-Vietnam protesters.
Times have changed.

Julia - another Hornblower fan! Hubby and I love both series.

Debbie - have to agree about John Medina. He's a great character.

Kaige - thanks! Any of the listed books are great reads

Gina - I have to agree. Suzanne Brockmann writes a great book.

Heather - I have renewed enthusiasm for them :-)

Jennifer - I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Harris - yes, men in uniform have that certain mystique
