Writing Away From Home

I’ve mentioned I’ve been struggling a little bit with my writing recently, and today hubby dropped me off at a fairly new shopping center, not far from us. I took my alphasmart, ordered a coffee and started writing in the coffee shop at Borders. I think I should do this more often because it’s great for my productivity. I can’t get up and wander around, do the washing or any one of the other 101 things that need doing as soon as it’s time to write. I wrote almost 3000 words and have approx 15,000 words left to complete my first draft, which should take me 7 1/2 days as long as I do my minimum word count each day. Does anyone else leave home to write, and if so, where do you go?

And now to the totally random:

Everywhere I looked today I saw ads for hand sanitizer. I don’t know if it’s someone trying to tell me something? Maybe the ad men are just being super active but I started to get a complex about germs on my hands. This is a relatively new product on the market, and I’ve managed all this time without it. I’ll admit I have some in my purse from a promotional giveaway but I keep forgetting to use it. It’s great for picnics and holidays, and I can see it would be excellent for those with kids. I’m sure there are germs hanging around the place, lurking for the unwary hand but are we going too far? So an informal survey - do you use hand sanitiser?

  1. I like to do writing on my lunch hour at work, or when I take my daughter to soccer practice. Knowing I only have a limited time to write really helps me focus. And it gets me away from other distractions.

I have some hand sanitiser in my purse, but don’t use it very often. It’s more for the kids when they’ve been touching “gross” things.

  2. Congrats on the word progress! Yeah, sometimes a change of scenery does wonder to one’s muses.

As for the ads, if there are sexy men in them, perhaps they are trying to tell you to use them in one of your stories.

  3. I write mostly from my home office. I’ve never tried to write at a coffee shop because I am easily distracted. I LOVE to people watch and KNOW I would spend my time doing that instead.

I do long hand writing while sitting at the soccer fields etc when my son is practising, but I do find I do my best work when I’m at my computer in my office. That’s when inspiration hits for me.

  4. Christine - according to the ads I saw yesterday there are gross things everywhere, and we’ll all become sick if we don’t instantly buy hand santiser.

Limited time helps me focus as well. It’s amazing how much you can write in half an hour time periods.

Tempest - no sexy men in the ads at all! Not a single bit of inspiration - so sad…

Cathryn - I did get a little distracted watching some of the kids at the storytime. I love people watching, too.

  5. I find my biggest distraction is the internet. Take that away from me and I’ll write like a demon!

Hand sanitizer has been big here for awhile now. There’s even articles on how kids can get intoxicated off it. (Using lots on their hands and then putting their hands in their mouth!)

  6. Yep, the internet is a time waster - that’s for sure.

That’s interesting about the hand sanitizer. I don’t like the smell of most of them. I wouldn’t be putting it near my mouth!
