The Writing Cave

It’s the first of the month here in New Zealand, and I’m a writer on a mission. My goal for this month is to write the first draft of a new book and leave it sitting while I head off on holiday in September. The final word count needs to be around 50,000 - 55,000 words so I need to write about 2000 words a day. Entirely possible. I can do that easily.

In between I’m going to work on edits for my next Middlemarch story. I have Rhian nipping at my heels. No pressure or anything! I have an idea for a Quickie Middlemarch story and then I need to work on the twins story. The twins are currently living in Dunedin and getting up to all sorts of mischief. In fact they’ve been so difficult I’ve needed a lot of thinking time to sort them out. Double trouble and all that.

Fancy Free edits are completed and I’m waiting for a release date. I need to complete the cover art sheet this morning before I start writing.

So, that’s me for the next month. What are your plans for August?

  1. jumping up and down! And a quickie too! And the twins!!!! … i see lots of Middlemarch kittie fixes ahead for me. Big happy sigh.

  2. LOL, Rhian. I think you’re better motivation than Sven

  3. Good luck on reaching those goals before vacation!!
I said a similar thing back in — oh, let’s see… June. I wanted my current wip done before our July vacay.
Yeah… still not done. And I’m blaming it all on the kids!

  4. You can do it Shelley!! I’ve been trying to hit around 2000 a day too, but it’s been hard with everything going on this past month. Sven is keeping me going though.

  5. Sounds like you have a productive month planned, Shelley. Good for you.

I’m working on Sun Scorched for NAL, due December 1st, so that means working all
summer. But at least I’ll have December off. I’m looking forward to that.

  6. Good luck with your goals! As for me, my only goals this month is to get through and still keep my sanity. Heh!

  7. I don’t make goals. I never keep them and then I’ll only feel bad and an undisciplined slacker.

  8. I really have to finish a couple of books. I’m entry the Brava contest, and have a single title I’ve been fooling around with for awhile.

  9. Thanks, Wylie. At least I don’t have school holidays to contend with. That’s a big help!

Christine: Keep up the great work. Today I went out to a cafe so I couldn’t procrastinate. That works really well for me.

I love your latest cover, Cathryn. It’s stunning.

Tempest - LOL And it’s just the start of the month!

Gabriele - I’m not normally a big goal setter but I’ve started posting my goals on my blog and this seems to work for me.

Shelli - Good luck with the Brava contest. I wish I had time to enter. I want to submit a caveman story as well, which I have to start yet and only a vague plot idea.

  10. HI

I looked through all your books–wow, you’re prolific!

I like your goals. I want to try and write 2,000 words per day–and finish a book this month.

    So far so good!

  11. Thanks, Erin. Good luck with finishing your book this month. I’m off to do my 2000 words right now!
